Free New Testament Commentaries & Doctrinal Studies

Expository Notes
(NT Commentary Series)

  • The purpose of this site is to provide free of charge a series of Expository Notes or commentaries on most of the New Testament. These notes aim to provide the serious Bible student with material which is not unduly technical and which does not require a knowledge of the original languages. At the same time, these commentaries are not generally too basic or brief. Rather, it has been the aim of the author to provide suitable material for more advanced personal or group Bible study. As yet, the series is incomplete. New titles will be added as soon as they become available, so please check this site from time to time to read or download the latest commentaries.

Bible Truths Explained
(Bible Doctrine Series)

  • In addition to the Expository Notes, you will find a series of studies entitled Bible Truths Explained. Although providing a fairly comprehensive study of each Bible doctrine, the series is intended only as an introduction to this subject. Theology students are encouraged to seek more detailed information in their recommended textbooks, although they may find the studies here useful for summarising each of the major Bible doctrines. In these studies, each theme is supported throughout with extensive quotations from the Scriptures. The doctrinal studies have been written from a Reformed perspective, and therefore expound the doctrines of grace. The studies in this series are based to a greater or lesser extent on the teaching of Dr. Charles Hodge. This is an ongoing work, so you are encouraged to check regularly for additional titles to this series.

Words to Consider
In evil long I took delight,
Unawed by shame or fear,
Till a new object struck my sight,
And stopped my wild career.

I saw One hanging on a tree,
In agonies and blood;
He fixed His languid eyes on me,
    As near His cross I stood.

Sure never till my latest breath,
Shall I forget that look!
It seemed to charge me with His death,
    Though not a word He spoke.

A second look He gave, which said,
"I freely all forgive;
This blood is for thy ransom paid;
    I die that thou mayest live."

Thus while His death my sin displays
In all its blackest hue,
Such is the mystery of grace,
    It seals my pardon too!

John Newton

"Grace" is more than mercy and love, it superadds to them. it denotes, not simply love, but the love of a sovereign, transcendently superior, one that may do what he will, that may wholly choose whether he will love or no. There may be love between equals, and an inferior may love a superior; but love in a superior, and so superior as he may do what he will, in such a one love is called grace: and therefore grace is attributed to princes; they are said to be gracious to their subjects, whereas subjects cannot be gracious to princes. Now God, who is an infinite Sovereign, who might have chosen whether ever He would love us or no, for Him to love us, this is grace.

Thomas Goodwin

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)

(1) God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, (2) Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son... (Hebrews 1:1-2a)

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)
